Does McDonalds Own Chipotle? – Mailbag

Hi – I was watching Nightline a couple weeks back and they had a special on Chipotle using free-range animals. Then I remembered that Chipotle is owned by McDonalds [America's #1 buyer of factory farm beef -ed]. Is this true? - James, Minneapolis, MN This is an excellent question we have also heard many times. After some research, the short answer is, no, Chipotle is not owned by McDonalds as of 2009 but it once was. The story is quite complicated actually.

JBS Swift Beef Recalls 400,000+ Pounds of Beef, E.coli 0157:H7 Outbreak in 13 States

JBS Swift has voluntarily recalled 42,000 pounds of beef packaged in late April from 13 states at the request of the USDA after fears of another e.coli 0157:H7 outbreak. This news comes only one week after last Friday's major Nestle E.coli 0157:H7 outbreak in cookie dough. The USDA has classified the outbreak as a 'Class I Recall' which is the highest level of severity their FSIS division applies to any recall. Follow the read link to get the whole story (thanks to JC Westbrook of Flickr for the nice shot).

Nestle Cookie Dough Recall, Suspected E.coli 0157:H7 Outbreak in 26+ States

Nestle USA today tacitly confirmed in a press release early reports that Nestle Toll House brand raw cookie dough was giving many people E.coli 0157:H7 infections by voluntarily recalling their entire line of products. Early reports from Bill Marler, food safety litigator, and a press release from the state of Colorado gave indications that a current rash of E.coli 0157:H7 cases across the country were tied to eating raw cookie dough (but this has still not been confirmed). Food Inc. Review – Advance DC Screening

Food. We all eat it. But only a select few know how it is produced. Food Inc., the first full length movie from the PBS documentarist Robert Kenner, aims to teach everyone how their food got to their plate – and it succeeds in spades. Dark chicken coops with 300,000 birds, illegal workers being recruited for hog slaughterhouses, feed lots bigger than Rhode Island – its all here in depressing detail. But for those of you that have already been sinking your spades into various organic gardens, Food Inc. will leave you wanting more. A lot more.

Glycemic Index Table v1.0

With insulin resistance and diabetes reaching epidemic levels in the United States, it is imperative to know the glycemic index of the foods we are commonly eating. Unfortunately, this data is usually locked away in research journals and when it is made available, you get a million listings with a ton of garbage results for foods you've never heard of. Well, we got tired of that and fixed up a nice GI table. (Thanks to flickr user kirinqueen for the shot)
