Major Issue: Truvia and Purevia
Over late 2008 and early 2009, a large shift in the sweetener market has taken place. Stevia-based sweeteners Truvia and Purevia have been cleared for retail sale in the United States by the FDA. This large shift in a staple consumer project has gone on with very little investigation by the main stream media or even alternative media. In our three part investigation, we dug through the scientific findings, the history of stevia and took a peak ahead at a world with artificial, stevia based sweeteners.
In the first part of our series, we looked back at the complex history of saccharin so that we could better understand the complexities that accompany artificial food products.
The second part of our series focused directly on the science that supported the passage of rebiana-based sweeteners. In short, many gaps exist and much more needs to be done.
Finally, we took a look at the troubled past of stevia and juxtaposed it to the speedy approval process that accompanied Truvia and Purevia. Many questions were raised with some dumbfounding results.
Enjoy the series – we hope it helps make a more educated consumer out of you.
